Coaching questions to ask a First time manager

Being a first time people manager is tough in the best of times but some conversations I’ve had recently highlight just how much more difficult it is when you start managing a hybrid or virtual team.

As a young manager many, many moons ago, my feedback skills were non-existent …I recently found a review I wrote for someone who continues to be a friend and was shocked at how cavalierly I disregarded her achievements and focused only on the many things she needed to change, in very global terms (“step out of your comfort zone” and “think out of the box” were just two of the many gems :))

But I got by because I had the opportunity to build a relationship with her and that was something I was good at. For managers who are starting to lead today, it’s not so easy to build relationships of trust given that you see people way less often.

If you have first time managers in your team, here’s a set of coaching questions I’ve found helpful to help people develop their managerial capabilities. Let me know what you think and what we could add to this list.

And if you’re interested in helping your people managers build their skills, we have a few seats left in our first public version of our Leading Edge program; an extended learning intervention for first time managers that we’ve been running for over a decade now. Please write to seethaa@navgati.in if you’d like more information.
